In our last German poetry class, the teacher asked us to write a poem of our own. I called mine Vergangenheit, meaning “the past.” For a Chinese title, I thought “Dawn and Dusk” worked better.

Please forgive any errors in the German.

Auf dem Fußweg strecken

die roten Gräser,

Sie atmen, husten, schreien und schweigen.

In der Nacht,

wenn die letzte Stimme wegschwebt,

sterben sie zusammen.

Am nächsten Morgen,

wenn der erste Tau fallt,

wachen sie auf,

alleine.

Along the footpath stretch

the red grasses.

They breathe, cough, cry out, and fall silent.

At night,

when the final note drifts away,

they die together.

In the morning,

after the first drop of dew falls,

they wake in loneliness.

er sang auch ein Lied für die Gezeiten,

Ach, schon lange her.

Ein Lied für den besonderen Tropfen,

der müde auf das Meer war und

Selbstmord am Strand begeht.

Schon lange her,er sagt

He once sang the praises of the tides,

ah, that was long ago.

Sang of that singular drop of water

that grew weary of the sea

and died upon the beach.

That was long ago, he says

to the hungry audience.

By now he has learned to forget:

first the ideal gone rancid,

then his lover, mother, forest, sky, and earth.

Now his memory is empty,

the black past has drifted away,

and the golden future kisses his brow.

Then he finishes and bows.

Memory is empty, but the theatre is full.

Apart from the applause, he says,

he hears nothing.

„Weltende.“

Schreibt die Time Square Leinwand,

die Broadway Reklametafel und die Hollywood Taschenlampe.

Keine Stimme.

Keine rote Gräser, kein Sänger, kein Zuschauer.

Keine Geliebte, keine Mutter.

Kein Gedächtnis.

Es gibt nur Wald, Himmel, Erde,

und eine schwache Duft nach der Party.

“The End of the World”

is written across the screens of Times Square,

the billboards of Broadway, the fluorescent lights of Hollywood.

No sound.

No red grasses, no singer, no audience.

No lover, no mother.

No memory.

Only forest, sky, and earth,

and the faint, hazy scent after a party.
